In our latest real estate tech entrepreneur interview, we’re speaking with Ashley Farrugia from ActivePipe.
Without further ado…
What do you do?
I am the CEO and co-founder of ActivePipe, a marketing automation platform that is rich in features specific to the real estate industry. In simple terms, a brokerage can create an automated email drip-campaign that seamlessly integrates properties. These campaigns can then be sent out on behalf of all their agents, in minutes.
Then, ActivePipe brings a whole new layer of data to the industry, based on how an agent’s contacts behave with a campaign’s content. Within three or four interactions, our platform can identify a contact’s intent to buy or sell a home. This helps real estate agents and brokers identify and convert potential buyers and sellers. In a nutshell, ActivePipe takes the guesswork out of real estate. It allows agents to eliminate cold-calls, have better conversations and as a result, close more deals.
What problem does your product/service solve?
I went to buy a house in my hometown of Melbourne and I couldn’t believe how inefficient the process was. I realised that agents often sit there with thousands of contacts in their CRM, but the potential of that database is completely untapped. We created ActivePipe as a way for agents to get maximum power out of their database with minimal effort. A client recently told me that ActivePipe is an alert system. It alerts an agent to who is looking at what properties, so that all they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call.
What are you most excited about right now?
My wife and I have just had a beautiful baby girl, so of course, I’m most excited about that! For ActivePipe, it’s our current expansion into the biggest real estate market in the world – the US. This year we were really lucky to be included in the NAR REach® Accelerator Program which has helped us get off the ground quickly and we already have a number of exciting brands working with us.
What’s next for you?
We’ve just launched ActivePipe for mortgage brokers, so a lot of work will be going into this new vertical as well as our growth in the US. I will be spending most of my time working from our premises in Austin, Texas next year to ensure we maximise our opportunities in the US. Who can say though? Things have moved so quickly in ActivePipe’s few short years of existence that it’s hard to say what’s coming around the corner next.
What’s a cause you’re passionate about and why?
I love mentoring people and helping them push their boundaries. One of the best things that come out of being a CEO is seeing your team grow and helping each individual achieve their career objectives. These days people seem to be afraid of failure and I see a lot of people sitting comfortably, too afraid of taking the leap to improve their lives or their career. Failure is the beginning of everything successful. We need to fail to succeed. As human beings, we start our lives this way. Even learning to walk we failed hundreds of times until we got there. Then, somewhere along the line, people become afraid to fail, which I find really sad. That’s what I’m passionate about right there! Helping people to grow and to feel comfortable with the fact that failure plays a big part of that journey.
