Toronto was put on the “smart city” map by Google.
Now, Bill Gates’ investment firm (Belmont Partners) is putting “Belmont Arizona” on the map with $80 million to purchase 25,000 acres. (via cnbc.com) If you don’t know where “Belmont” is, not to worry. The city doesn’t actually exist yet. They are creating it from scratch.
Innovation is smart cities is certainly one of the areas I’m most fascinated by. Building from nothing is likely to lead to more innovation than re-building around pre-existing infrastructure (such as the Toronto and Tampa projects).
Where’s the next “smart city” going to sprout?
