RaiseMe’s recent fundraising caught my attention:
A startup that uses micro-scholarships to motivate students and demystify the cost of higher education. In partnership with over 300 colleges and universities, RaiseMe has extended over $2 billion in scholarships for milestones like an “A” in an AP course or a leadership role in an after-school sport. Roughly one-third of the students who participate are the first in their family to attend college, and over half are underrepresented minorities.
For last week’s mastermind newsletter (#40), I applied a real estate lends to the topic, and talked about a concept I’ll call “iRERecruiter“: Instant real estate recruiter. A world in which every agent knows exactly how much they are worth to any given brokerage. Ahead of speaking to them.
A few of the curated articles referenced in last week’s Weekly Radar:
Bank of the West conducted a 2018 Millennial Study, and one of the learnings completely surprised me. Apparently, one in three millennials who already own their homes tapped into their retirement accounts to finance their down payment. That’s mind-boggling. I mean, I know down payments are the issue, but funding your home with retirement savings is risky business.
Jason Calacanis, a longtime entrepreneur, and angel investor, penned a note to founders he’s invested in: This is your Captain speaking, I’m turning on the fasten seat belt sign. It’s a warning to his portfolio: a downturn is coming, and make sure you’re ready.
Curbed covers urban transportation quite frequently, and recently shared how autonomous vehicle planner Yes Segura gets around Seattle (diary format). Segura is a host at Impact Hub (the co-working establishment where I work), consults for cities to help plan for new transportation technology, and drives for Uber. A huge proponent for bikesharing, from his perspective, there are three things to consider when it comes to whether to use dockless bikes in Seattle: street design, time, and distance (including topography). The diary closes with the question: “are we going to re-design cities for communities or cars?”
As a reminder, the purpose of the Geek Estate Mastermind is two fold:
- Curate the world’s most innovative and diverse community of real estate creatives, doers, and pioneers.
- Make our members wildly successful in their careers building real estate companies.
